Puerto Rican Events

No matter where or when you travel in Puerto Rico, there is certain to be a festival happening. Puerto Ricans really know how to party and Puerto Rican events are the best!. Whether it is music in the streets until 4am, winding streets decorated with streamers and barbecued food around every corner, a Puerto Rican festival will be the highlight of your trip. It could be one of the nationwide Puerto Rican holidays, or a local annual fiestas patronales, but be prepared for an event to remember – a late night, delicious drinks and amazing food. Entertainment will include street processions, often with a religious flavor, music concerts, local food, games and rides.

Puerto Rican Festivals

Every town, from San Juan to the smallest Puerto Rican village, has a patron saint and every saint has a festival. Often lasting up to a week, these Puerto Rican festivals will show you how the locals really live. These festivals are religious in origin, but the whole event has grown over the years to include many different elements, from sporting events to the pulsating beats of Puerto Rico folk music, that last well into the night. The most popular of these festivals are found in San Juan in late June and Ponce in mid-December.

San Juan is where most of the major Puerto Rican events are held and their annual San Sebastian Street Festival is not to be missed. The city of San German attracts people from all over the country for its Sugar Harvest Festival held in spring. For music-lovers, each November San Juan hosts the Festival of Puerto Rican Music, which features the island’s indigenous plena and bomba folk styles in a program of Puerto Rica concerts and musicians.

Puerto Rico Theater

The rich cultural heritage of the country can be seen in the Puerto Rica Theater. The Annual International Film Festival and the International Theater Festival are two events that aim to promote the arts as well as the culture of Puerto Rico through the film and theater mediums. Patrons are encouraged to enjoy dinners, parties and the local scenery as well as excellent theater and great films.

Puerto Rico Concerts and Music

Puerto Rico is a country of music with different musical styles having equal prominence. From the iconic beat of Caribbean folk music to the classical, wherever you go in the island, there will be music. One notable annual event on the country's musical calendar is the Casals Festival. It is an international classical music festival of some renown founded by the legendary cellist, composer and director, Pablo Casals, who chose to retire in Puerto Rico. The festival is held in San Juan and attracts some of the greatest musical talent for a series of concerts that feature orchestras, conductors and soloists.

Puerto Rico Sports

Puerto Rico offers its citizens a veritable A to Z of sporting opportunities and sports events. Team sports are played at a local level and representative teams play at national, regional and international level. Baseball and basketball are popular with players and spectators, baseball fans being quite fanatical about their sport.

An extensive system of lovely public beaches has been developed by Puerto Rico, and these are very popular, particularly on weekends. Tourists can enjoy swimming, diving and snorkeling in the beautiful Caribbean waters. Boating, sailing, surfing and windsurfing are also popular and rentals are available.

Puerto Rico is home to some beautiful golf courses and both the Ladies and the Senior PGA tournaments end their season on the island. Some of the best courses are at Hyatt Beach Hotel, Bahia Beach Plantation, Club Rio Mar, Palmas del Mar and Mayaguez Hilton. Each year, one if the major events on the Puerto Rico sports calendar is the Ambassadors Cup. The finals are played in Puerto Rico, the qualifier rounds having been played across the US and Canada.
